Özet
The purpose of this longitudinal study was to investigate the Translation and InterpretingDepartment students’ general notions about translation at the beginning, in the middle, and in thefinal year of their education. The participants were prep year, second year, and fourth-year studentswho were enrolled in the Department of Translation and Interpreting at Adana Alparslan TürkeşScience and Technology University between 2015 and 2020. The data were collected through theGeneral Notions about Translation Questionnaire developed by Orozco (2000) and interviewsconducted with randomly chosen students in the department. The data were analyzed usingdescriptive statistics and content analysis methods. The data collection tools aimed to explorechanges in students’ perceptions about general notions about translation throughout theireducation. The results showed that the participating students’ general notions about translationindicated changes in several aspects throughout their education in the department. How studentsdefined translation in general, elements that intervene in translation, basic unit of translation,kinds of translation, instruments that can help translators, vocabulary problems, and ideas about atranslator’s knowledge and performance were found to have changed according to the class levelthey were enrolled in. The findings are expected to shed light on the translation education processesand explore changes in students’ notions.
