A descriptive content analysis of the extent of Bloom’s taxonomy in the reading comprehension questions of the course book Q: Skills for success 4 reading and writing
(Peace and Conflict Studies, 2016) Ulum, Ömer Gökhan
Bloom’s taxonomy is probably the most commonly used one among the cognitive process models. It is a classification system that emphasizes the procedures starting from remembering the knowledge to more complex cognitive levels like evaluating the knowledge. Firstly, the aim of this study has been to find out to what extent Bloom’s taxonomy is referred in reading comprehension questions of an English as a Foreign Language course book. With this in mind, the research question To what extent do the reading sections of the EFL course book Q: Skills for Success 4 Reading and Writing cover the lower and higher order cognition levels of Bloom’s taxonomy? was formulated. The EFL course book Q: Skills for Success 4 Reading and Writing by Oxford Publishing was analyzed through descriptive content analysis method. Findings of the study suggested that this analyzed course book lacked the higher level cognitive skills involved in Bloom’s Taxonomy. As a result, by means of the findings, some assumptions have been reached with the aim of suggesting how the course books which are being written or will be written should refer to Bloom’s taxonomy in their reading sections. © 2016: Ömer Gökhan Ulum and Nova Southeastern University.

A study on the morpho-syntactic profiles of Syrian children learning turkish as a second language
(Springer, 2018) Üredi, Lütfi; Ulum, Ömer Gökhan
Having a multifaceted complex structure, language is a combination of a pile of mental states or thoughts which are transferred by means of shared rules or principles created on the grounds of phonology, morphology, and semantics. Language, being such a humanly and complicated formation, is highly in touch with a group of pertinent scientific zones like psychology and sociology, and this interaction may mirror the morpho-syntactic features of people. That is to say, selecting and forming any word, structuring a full sentence, and seeing the meaning of the sentence necessitate intricate rules or phases. With respect to this phenomenon, intricate mental or cognitive processes might be challenged in second language learning which means picking up the syntactic rules of a language and converting these rules into language skills. In this study, ten Syrian children, being educated in a primary school and owning different psychological schemas, as well as being not at similar ages, were inspected. The children were required to talk about the picture book Smile Please by Sanjiv Jaiswal “Sanjay” in Turkish language, and the narrations were audiotaped by the researchers. Being formed on a descriptive research design, the data were gathered and analyzed qualitatively. As a consequence of the study that checked the general morpho-syntactic profiles of Syrian children, both different and shared morpho-syntactic characteristics were found out. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

CRITICAL PEDAGOGY AND PARTICIPATORY APPROACH IN TURKEY: VIEWS OF PRE-SERVICE ELT TEACHERS
(2019) Ördem, Eser; Ulum, Ömer Gökhan
Although the contemporary history of critical pedagogy and Englishlanguage teaching methods dates back to 1960s, the implementation anduse of critical pedagogy has been hardly used in ELT departments andEFL classroom settings because the principles of critical pedagogy andthe commercial desires of global textbooks publishers affected by thestatus of English as a lingua franca have remained incompatible. Thelatter has been more prevalent and imposing owing to commercial factors. This study aimed to unravel the views of pre-service ELT teachers (N=39)regarding the topics covered on the agenda released within the lastmonth. Two data collection tools were used to collect data. The first toolwas composed of a list of topics that contained social, cultural, religious, political and other risky topics. The second tool was an interview form toelicit the pre-service teachers’ detailed views regarding the inclusion ofthe topics. The results indicate that the topics shown to the participantswere hardly mentioned in ELT classrooms. However, they noted that theinclusion of the topics was necessary in the curriculum of ELTdepartments in Turkey. In addition, various social and political issuesneed to be incorporated into curriculum and syllabus by developing theculture of radical, pluralistic and direct democracy, and these sociopolitical topics need to be negotiated in classes that teach English as asecond language in a democratic atmosphere. A critical perspective needsto be developed towards global textbooks in English.

Deconstructing ELT ideology and normalized discourses through critical discourse analysis: Collaborative autoethnography
(2022) Ulum, Ömer Gökhan; Ördem, Eser
English language teaching departments have been regarded as neutral and prestigious for more than a century. However, the colonial, neocolonial, postcolonial and neoliberal practices of these departments are forgotten. In this study, we aim to deconstruct this ideology and develop a critical perspective within the framework of critical pedagogy and critical discourse analysis. Both of these two approaches aim to analyze power, power relations, forms of knowledge and subjective experiences. This study is based on collaborative autoethnography that prioritizes researchers` beliefs, experiences, observations and stories. We asked 10 guiding questions that showed how we came to reject our current identity in ELT discipline that produced various forms of knowledge that constitute certain discursive practices. We aimed to show that ELT departments in Turkey are a continuation of this colonial and neoliberal mind, and therefore a new space should be created for other languages to take their place on social circles. We strongly recommend that ELT departments can incorporate lessons that reinforce criticality, critical pedagogy and critical discourse analysis so that the real historical conditions could be shown to the students and teacher candidates in these departments. Therefore, new discourses can be constituted and produced to allow novel subjective experiences and practices.

How do different groups conceive primary school english language education? A sample of cono tribe
(Springer Science and Business Media B.V., 2019) Üredi, Lütfi; Ulum, Ömer Gökhan
It is crystal clear that we can count several reasons to learn English language. People all over the world learn English as a second or foreign language. Authorities contain English language in their school syllabuses, and students begin learning it at a very young age. It is the language of science, technology, trade, diplomacy, and many other fields. Competency in using English enhances the possibility of having a good job in home country or abroad. It is simply the magic wand of several opportunities. However, how different groups like Cono tribe regard English is an intriguing issue that needs to be investigated. Considering all these dimensions, this study investigates the attitudes of a diverse group, in our case Cono tribe, towards the importance of English language education at early ages. Based upon a descriptive research design, an interview designed by the researchers was directed to the members of the mentioned group. The findings of the study bring diverse views of the studied group. Besides, the results obtained from this descriptive study may prove to be of some help for the researchers in the related research area. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2019.
