Öğe A Test of the Socioemotional Selectivity Theory Among Young Adults(2023) Soylu, CemThe primary assertion of the Socioemotional Selectivity Theory (SST) is that with increasing age, individuals become more selective in their social networks and consciously reduce their social network size. Although SST has received considerable support from studies conducted in mostly individualistic countries, such as the United States and Germany, there are very few studies in which it has been tested in collectivistic countries. Therefore, the present study aimed to test the SST argument in Turkey. There were 219 Turkish young adult participants, aged 18–28 (Mage = 20.07 years, SD = 1.76). Participants completed a Social Convoy Questionnaire, Future Time Perspective (FTP) scale and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule. Via the structural equation model, it was found that (a) open-ended FTP directly and positively related to positive affect, higher level of social satisfaction, and smaller social network sizes; and (b) social satisfaction mediated the relationship between FTP and young adults’ positive affect. Sonuç olarak elde edilen bulgular çocukluk çağı olumsuz yaşantılarının yaşam kalitesini iyimser ve çaresiz yaklaşım üzerinden dolaylı olarak etkilediğine işaret etmektedir.Öğe Investigation of Variables Affecting Attitudes of Emerging Adults Towards Older Individuals(2022) Soylu, CemSimilar to other countries, the ratio of the older people in the total population and the number of studies in this field is increasing day by day due to the decrease in the fertility rate and the increase in life expectancy in the Turkish culture. The aim of the present study is to examine whether a number of sociodemographic variables and different sub-dimensions of empathy predict the attitudes toward older adults. A total of 143 undergraduate students, 111 (77.6%) of whom were women, who were in emerging adulthood (M. = 19.76 SD. = 1.37, range 18-24 years) were included in the study. The data was collected using a ‘Demographic Information Form’, ‘The Interpersonal Reactivity Index’, and ‘Kogan’s Attitude Toward Older People Scale’ and hierarchical regression analysis was performed. ‘Willingness to live with the elderly in the future’ (yes; ? = 0.42, p < .001, no idea; ? = 0.30, p < .001) and ‘being a woman’ (? = -0.19, p = .017) were associated with a more positive attitude toward older people. Moreover, when ''willingness to live with the elderly in the future' and 'being a woman' were controlled in the first step, it was found that high 'empathic concern' positively predicted the attitudes toward older adults (? = .20, p = .038). Partially consistent with the previous studies, these findings indicate that ‘gender’, ‘want to live with an older person in the future’, and ‘empathic concern’ are significantly related to the attitudes toward older adults.Öğe Meaning in Life as A Mediator of Associations Between Self-Esteem and Psychological Adjustment Among Middle-Aged Women with Breast Cancer(Istanbul Univ, Fac Letters, Dept Psychology, 2023) Soylu, Cem; Ucanok, ZehraA growing body of research has clearly demonstrated that meaning in life plays an important role in psychological adjustment in the face of highly stressful life events, such as a cancer diagnosis. This study primarily aims to explore the predictors of meaning in life and the mediating role of the two dimensions of meaning in life (presence of meaning, and search for meaning) on the association between self-esteem and psychological adjustment among middle-aged women diagnosed with breast cancer. In the present study, psychological well-being and psychological distress have been used as indicators of psychological adjustment. The sample consisted of 125 women aged between 40 - 65 (M-age = 52.34, SD = 6.83). Participants completed a battery of self-report questionnaires including the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Psychological Well-Being Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Meaning in Life Questionnaire, and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. The findings revealed a negative significant relationship between the presence of meaning and the search for meaning. Multiple regression analyses revealed that perceived social support, age, perceived income level, and time since diagnosis positively predicted the presence of meaning and explained 30% of the total variance. On the other hand, perceived social support, age, and the time since diagnosis negatively predicted the search for meaning and explained 34% of the total variance. Moreover, the findings of mediation analysis showed that the presence of meaning in life partially mediates the association between self-esteem and psychological adjustment. In other words, although the predictors of the meaning in life are similar for both dimensions, it was shown that the mediating role of the presence of meaning was stronger than the search for meaning in the relationship between self-esteem and psychological adjustment. Hence, it can be concluded that high self-esteem contributes positively to psychological adjustment by increasing the presence of meaning in the life of middle-aged female cancer patients.Öğe Pathways from education and childhood parental death to successful aging: the role of social conditions and perceived income level(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2023) Soylu, Cem; Ozekes, Banu CengelciObjectives Although the association between adverse childhood conditions and health in later life has been relatively well established, little is known about how and through which mechanism this association develops. Building on the developmental adaptation model (Martin & Martin, 2002), the present study investigates the effects of distal and proximal influences on successful aging (SA). Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted of 475 adults aged 50 and above (Mean age = 72.13, SD = 10.46). SA was measured based on Rowe and Kahn's successful aging criteria model (1997) and an SA operationalization based on a number of multidimensional biopsychosocial indicators, including no disease and disability, active engagement with life, high physical and cognitive functioning, psychological well-being, life satisfaction and a one-item subjective SA question. Results Parental death had no direct effect on SA (beta = .03, p = .629), whereas education had (beta= .39, p < .001). Furthermore, perceived income level and social conditions were identified as two sequential mediators between both education and SA; and parental death and SA. Conclusions The findings suggest that both early life and current factors contribute to explaining SA in a variety of ways.Öğe Predictors of domain-specific and global life satisfaction across the first half of life: which domains of life satisfaction are the most important for global life satisfaction?(Springer, 2023) Soylu, CemWhile there have been several recent studies putting forward different predictors and outcomes of life satisfaction in various life domains, most have addressed life satisfaction as a whole, with only a handful investigating in detail life satisfaction in specific life domains. Based on a sample of 217 adults in the first half of life in Turkey (M-age = 23.85 years, SD = 5.75), the present study firstly explores predictors of life satisfaction as a whole and in six specific domains (i.e., satisfaction with social, health, financial, leisure, work and residence status), and then examines the unique contributions of the domain-specific areas to global life satisfaction. Adopting a 'bottom-up' approach, this study assesses the general self-efficacy, perceived social support, perceived control, global life satisfaction and satisfaction associated with various life domains, as well as the sociodemographic information of the participants. The findings reveal perceived social support and income level to be the most consistent predictors of global and domain-specific life satisfaction. Furthermore, after controlling for sociodemographic and psychological factors in a regression analysis based on beta values, financial, work, residence and social satisfaction made a marginally significant contribution to the enhancement of global life satisfaction. More importantly, there was no statistically significant difference between the contributions of these variables to global life satisfaction. The present study contributes to the existing body of literature on life satisfaction in demonstrating that individual domains of life satisfaction may be considered new targets for interventions aimed at increasing subjective well-being and life satisfaction.Öğe Socio-demographic correlates of subjective age in young and middle-aged adults(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2022) Soylu, CemSubjective age, referring to the age people feel rather than their chronological age, is conceptualized as an important biopsychosocial marker of development, and there is a growing body of literature linking the age one feels to a range of psychological, behavioral, and functional outcomes. Little is known, however, about the correlates of subjective age. To fill this gap, a questionnaire was applied to a convenience sample of 229 participants (Mage = 28.69 years, SD = 8.12 years) in the present study measuring socio-demographic, health-related variables and multidimensional subjective age. The questionnaire was applied using the Google Forms web application, and the results were analyzed with a standard multiple regression analysis. The regression analysis revealed that the senior chronological age, a lower level of depressive symptoms, and being married or with a partner were associated with a younger subjective age. Importantly, the chronological age group (younger vs middle-aged adults) had no moderating role in the relationship between subjective age and sociodemographic or health-related variables. In conclusion, the findings highlighted the importance of certain sociodemographic characteristics on subjective age.Öğe Testing a model of biopsychosocial successful aging based on socioemotional selectivity theory in the second half of life(Cambridge Univ Press, 2023) Soylu, Cem; Ozekes, Banu CengelciObjectives:We first tested a successful aging model, which included biomedical and psychosocial indicators. Next, we tested the assumptions on the social network characteristics of the socioemotional selectivity theory in a model where the outcome variable is successful aging. Design:Cross-sectional study. Setting:The study was carried out in municipal centers and nursing homes. Participants:A total of 478 adults (Mean age = 72.11, SD = 10.43) were enrolled. Measurements:Psychological Well-being Scale, Life Satisfaction Scale, Future Time Perspective, Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living Scale, Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale, and Mini-Mental State Examination Test were completed. Results:The structural equation modeling analyses indicated that higher social satisfaction mediated the association of the future time perspective with successful aging. Furthermore, there was another significant indirect sequential path from the future time perspective to successful aging. The path was first via the number of close social partners and second, social satisfaction. Conclusions:The findings highlight the importance of social satisfaction in the process of successful aging and provide novel evidence that the socioemotional selectivity theory can be considered as a biopsychosocial model of successful aging in future studies.Öğe YAŞLANMA ÇALIŞMALARINDA YÖNTEMSEL SORUNLAR: TEMEL KAVRAMLAR VE ÖRNEKLER(2023) Soylu, CemGelişim bilimin odak noktası, döllenmeden ölüme kadar olan süreçteki biyolojik, bilişsel ve sosyo-duygusal gelişimin yaşla birlikte nasıl bir örüntü izlediğini ortaya çıkarmaktır.
