Öğe Can the Scope of Secularization Theory Be Expanded Beyond the Modern-Christian-West? Exploring the Alevi Experience in Turkey(Wiley, 2024) Ertit, VolkanThis study asserts that the secularization theory has the potential to offer insights into the processes of social change experienced by faith groups outside the modern West. The study focuses on the transformation undergone by Alevi groups in Turkey, who are now experiencing a more modern way of life compared to their past. In this qualitative study, data collection was conducted through semistructured interviews during field studies in the cities of & Ccedil;orum (Turk Alevis) and Tunceli/Dersim (Zaza/Kurd Alevis). Based on the interview findings, the study concludes that the new Alevi generation leads a more modern and at the same time more secular daily life compared to their parents. Therefore, the main assertion of this research is that the classical secularization theory has the potential to provide valuable insights not only for modern societies where Christianity is dominant but also for understanding the transformations occurring within Alevi communities in Turkey.Öğe Development and Validation of Secularity Scale for Muslims(De Gruyter Poland Sp Z O O, 2023) Ertit, VolkanThere is currently no secularity scale with strong psychometric properties that would allow for the examination of the secularization process experienced by Muslims. Thus, the purpose of this article is to develop a psychometrically sound and quick-to-apply scale that can be used to measure the degree of secularity among Muslims. For exploratory factor analysis (EFA), an inventory with 65 items was applied to 1,573 university students, and it yielded a two-factor structure with an internal reliability of 0.975 for Daily Life factor and 0.952 for Faith and Prayer factor. After EFA, the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed with 4,391 individuals, and a structure that can be deemed very solid was found. The measurement invariance was also examined, and it was discovered that the scale can be used for various populations. In addition, the scale has convergent validity, a high test-retest result, and discriminant validity. The 25-item Secularity Scale has a new theoretical approach - which is not only based on faith and prayer but also daily life activities - and sound psychometric properties. Examining how secularity manifests itself in Muslim societies might be useful in describing, predicting, and explaining how individuals act in a variety of contexts. The scale might also help to avoid the use of approach utilized in Christian-centred secularity debates in the case of Muslim-majority societies.Öğe The failure of Islamization policies in Turkey: a Victory of Secularization Theory?(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2024) Ertit, VolkanRecep Tayyip Erdo & gbreve;an's aim to raise a pious generation has failed to achieve its objectives. On the contrary, relevant academic studies reveal that Turkish society is secularizing. Therefore, the present study seeks to explain the reasons why Erdo & gbreve;an's policy of Islamizing Turkish society failed despite him having the whole state apparatus at his disposal. Recent studies argue that this transformation is a reaction to the repressive policies of the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalk & imath;nma Partisi - AKP) and that the dissatisfaction with Erdo & gbreve;an and AKP has turned into a parallel dissatisfaction with religion. However, this article argues that the secularization debates centering on hot politics are only a small part of the picture and that the modernization process, as the secularization theory claims, is behind the young generations' disaffection with religion in Turkey. The article argues that Turkey has been experiencing a demographic transition and religious change similar to what occurred in regions where scientific developments, industrialization and urbanization, i.e., modernization, had occurred.Öğe Transformation of Funeral Rituals in Arab Alawites of Adana: Less Costly, Less Tiring(Ankara Haci Bayram Veli University, 2022) Ertit, VolkanThe present study aims to describe and analyze the change in the funeral rituals of Arab Alawites. The study takes a structural-functional approach to assessing ceremonies, rituals, and other death-related phenomena. In other words, a discussion was held based on the functions attributed to death-related social organizations for the continuation of the structure. This study, which was designed in accordance with the qualitative research method, has a phenomenological approach. Field surveys were carried out in Yamaçlı (10) and Haydaroğlu (5) neighbourhoods of Yüreğir district in Central Adana at three different times. Due to the fact that the researcher is part of the study group, the data were collected through the researcher's own observations at previous funerals, in-depth interviews conducted face-to-face through a semi-structured form and focus group discussions. The files generated through the tagging that resulted from the literature review as well as the information gathered during the interviews were transferred to MAXQDA, a qualitative data analysis application, before being subjected to descriptive analysis. The texts were tagged under 44 codes and gathered under the following main topics: “shroud”, “the point of death”, “announcing the death”, “bathing the deceased”, “Hımlen “, “laments and songs”, “the 7th day after the death”, “the mourning process”, “folk beliefs” and “other changes”. The findings obtained as a result of the field study indicate that the contribution of funeral rituals in maintaining the whole of society, that is, its function, has regressed among Arab Alawites. In the ceremony, ritual, rite and behaviour patterns that emerged around the aforementioned main topics, it was noted that the practices adopted by the community in the past have either disappeared completely or were made less troublesome/tiring. © 2022 Ankara Haci Bayram Veli University.
