BRIDGING BORDERS , ALLEVIATING POVERTY: THE ROLE OF INTERNATIONAL REMITTANCES
(Inst Of Social Sciences Ivo Pilar, 2023) Can, Zeynep Gizem; Can, Ufuk
This paper examines the impact of international remittances on poverty. A three-stage least squares model is used to examine whether there is a two-way relationship between poverty and international remittances. Rising poverty levels create incentives for migration abroad, with immigrants sending remittances back to their country of origin, thereby reducing poverty. Higher household incomes are associated with a decline in poverty, while growing income inequality tends to exacerbate poverty. In addition, trade openness has a positive effect on international remittances, and in financially developed economies, official remittances flow more smoothly as transaction costs decline. By channeling international remittances, which are recognised as a stable source of financial support, into the accumulation of physical and human capital, they contribute to economic development and enhance their impact on poverty reduction. This study makes a notable contribution to the literature by using the latest comprehensive dataset and an econometric methodology. It also distinguishes the impact of international remittances on poverty using income group-specific and region-specific considerations.

Distributional Drivers of Carbon Emissions in Türkiye
    (MDPI, 2025) Can, Zeynep Gizem
This paper investigates the distributional drivers of carbon emissions in T & uuml;rkiye, focusing on how household income and consumption patterns influence carbon footprints. Utilizing the microsimulation model, we integrate detailed expenditure data from T & uuml;rkiye's 2019 Household Budget Survey with the 2016 Input-Output table from the World Input-Output Database. This approach enables the simulation of both direct and indirect CO2 emissions, providing a comprehensive analysis of the environmental impact of household consumption across different income groups. Our findings reveal significant disparities in carbon emissions, highlighting the complex interplay between income levels, consumption behaviors, and environmental outcomes. This research underscores the importance of considering distributional effects in the design of carbon pricing policies to ensure equity and effectiveness in emission reduction strategies. This study focuses on understanding household distributional drivers of carbon emissions.

DOES GEOPOLITICAL RISK RISE CARBON EMISSIONS? EVIDENCE FROM ACS-ARDL MODEL FOR OECD COUNTRIES
(Economic and Financial Research Assoc - EFAD, 2025) Can, Zeynep Gizem
Geopolitical risk constitutes an escalating global challenge, exerting profound implications for carbon emissions and the stability of ecological systems. This paper investigates the nexus between geopolitical risk and carbon emissions by employing advanced econometric techniques on a balanced panel of 25 OECD member states, incorporating extensive pre-estimation diagnostics and robustness checks to ensure methodological rigor. The empirical evidence demonstrates that elevated geopolitical risk exerts a statistically significant and positive effect on carbon emissions, thereby intensifying environmental degradation. Moreover, population expansion and higher per capita GDP are identified as key drivers of ecological deterioration, while trade openness and financial development emerge as mitigating factors. These results underscore the critical importance of fostering cross-border dialogue and enhancing institutional platforms established by supranational bodies to reduce geopolitical tensions. Coordinated international strategies that address both political stability and environmental sustainability are thus imperative for mitigating the intertwined challenges of global security and climate change.

Evaluation of International Monetary Policy Coordination: Evidence from Machine Learning Algorithms
(Springer, 2024) Can, Ufuk; Saltik, Omur; Can, Zeynep Gizem; Degirmen, Suleyman
Being a critical for integrating of the global financial system, international monetary policy coordination deserves attention to offer timely and vital information about the ongoing interaction between monetary policy practices and its future. This paper reveals the integration of economies in international monetary policy coordination and the underlying adjustment dynamics of this process in advanced and emerging economies. We perform convolutional signal analysis, K-means clustering, and classification algorithms to extract similar features or patterns of monetary policy actions implemented in different economies. The empirical results show that emerging economies are more vulnerable to internal and external shocks than advanced economies due to their financial vulnerabilities. Advanced and emerging economies respond similarly but differently within their clusters. Global monetary conditions are the key driver of monetary policy decisions; however, output growth, international reserves, policy rate, credit default swap, and consumer price index are the other important country-specific determinants. This study enhances our comprehension of the intricate dynamics within monetary policy interactions among advanced and emerging economies, shedding light on the nuanced dynamics of leader-follower relationships. Additionally, this paper not only extends the literature on international monetary policy coordination by using a state-of-the-art dataset and analysis, but also provides a solid foundation for future research on this topic.

Financing or taxation? Assessing the effectiveness of carbon emissions reduction programs
(Elsevier, 2025) Can, Ufuk; Can, Zeynep Gizem
Carbon emissions are of significant concern, as they pose a growing threat to the integrity of ecological systems. This paper investigates the effectiveness of consumption-based carbon emissions reduction programs. We use an innovative quantile panel regression methodology as well as a comprehensive preliminary analysis and robustness analysis with a sample of 38 member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Our empirical findings demonstrate that output and foreign trade have a significant impact on carbon emissions, thus supporting the trade-extended environmental Kuznets curve. Furthermore, environmental taxes and green finance play a pivotal role in mitigating carbon emissions, and the latter emerges as a particularly effective policy instrument. The sector-and product-specific determination of environmental taxes, coupled with the strategic channeling of green finance to clean and renewable energy sources and production processes, will catalyze advancements in environmental sustainability.

The Poverty Effectiveness of Social Security Benefits in Türkiye
    (MDPI, 2025) Can, Zeynep Gizem
This research investigates the role and effectiveness of T & uuml;rkiye's social security system and transfer expenditures in addressing poverty. Social security mechanisms are designed to alleviate poverty by helping individuals meet their essential needs. In T & uuml;rkiye, transfer payments offer temporary relief, particularly to disadvantaged populations; however, they may also foster long-term dependency. Although the immediate impacts of such transfers are widely discussed in the academic literature, their contribution to alleviating structural poverty remains underexplored. This study focuses on how transfer expenditures influence individuals' ability to achieve lasting well-being. The Turkish context is especially relevant due to recent institutional shifts in social security policy and the increasing politicization of social assistance. Employing data analysis at the regional level, this study assesses the effectiveness of social transfers and explores their structural role in poverty reduction. It also provides policy suggestions aimed at developing more inclusive and durable strategies. The results are intended to offer broadly applicable insights for other developing countries through the lens of T & uuml;rkiye's experience.

What Drives Carbon Emissions in OECD Countries?
(SAGE Publications Inc, 2025) Can, Ufuk; Can, Zeynep Gizem
The intensification of carbon emissions poses a critical challenge to global ecological stability. This study employs panel quantile regression techniques alongside extensive preliminary diagnostics and robustness analyses to identify the principal determinants of consumption-based carbon emissions across 38 Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) members. Empirical findings reveal that demographic scale, economic output, international trade, and technological advancement significantly influence emission levels, lending support to both the trade-adjusted environmental Kuznets curve and the stochastic impacts by regression on population, affluence, and technology hypotheses. Furthermore, policy instruments such as environmental taxation and green finance play substantive roles in emission mitigation, with green finance demonstrating particular efficacy. This study makes a significant contribution to the current literature on ecological economics by shedding light on the pivotal factors of carbon emissions across various quantiles and cross-sections.JEL Classification: C31, H23, Q54, Q56
