Öğe Electrocatalytic methanol oxidation on graphene/conducting polymer/pt based electrodes(Adana Alparslan Türkeş Bilim ve Teknoloji Üniversitesi, 2026) Abanoz, Melih Utku; Karazehir, TolgaThis study investigates the methanol oxidation performance of platinum-based nanocomposite electrodes supported on different conductive polymers, namely polyaniline (PANI), poly(indole-5-carboxylic acid) (PICA), and poly(propanoic acid) (PPA), integrated with electrochemically reduced graphene oxide. All electrodes were synthesized under identical platinum deposition conditions at −0.2 V for 600 seconds to enable a direct comparison of the intrinsic effects of the polymer matrix on electrocatalytic performance. Electrochemical analyses revealed that the polymer structure plays a decisive role in determining catalytic activity. The Pt/PANI/ERGO electrode exhibited the highest mass activity of 719 mA mg-1Pt, followed by Pt/PICA/ERGO with 451 mA mg-1Pt and Pt/PPA/ERGO with 248 mA mg-1Pt. These results indicate that, despite identical platinum loading conditions, the polymer matrix significantly affects catalyst utilization and methanol oxidation efficiency. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed a substantial reduction in charge transfer resistance upon ERGO incorporation, confirming enhanced electron transfer kinetics and improved interfacial properties. Structural and compositional analyses were performed to support the electrochemical findings. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that polymer morphology strongly influences the dispersion of platinum nanoparticles, with PANI-based systems showing a more homogeneous and porous structure. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) confirmed uniform elemental distribution and higher platinum accumulation in ERGO-supported electrodes. X-ray diffraction analysis verified the crystalline structure of platinum, while Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy provided insight into the polymer–graphene and polymer–metal interactions. The results indicate that the variation in the polymer structure leads to significant differences in the electrochemical performance even when the platinum deposition conditions are the same. Among all the systems studied, PANI-based electrodes showed the best catalytic activity, better charge transfer properties and better stability highlighting the importance of the polymer selection in electro-catalyst design for direct methanol fuel cell.
